How is WonderWatch different from YouTube Kids?

YouTube Kids chooses videos with a mix of algorithms, user input and human review, while WonderWatch shows only creators you've approved, rates every video like a film, and limits how often your child can switch videos.

How do they compare, feature by feature?

WonderWatch and YouTube Kids compared
FeatureYouTube KidsWonderWatch
How videos are chosenA mix of algorithmic filtering, user input and human review. Homescreen videos get an extra human review; Search and Recommended are chosen by algorithm.Every creator is reviewed before entering the catalogue, and every video is rated on a written rubric for safety (G to PG-13) and value (2 out of 5 or better).
Parent approvalPick a content level (Preschool, Younger or Older), or choose “Approve content yourself” to hand-pick videos, channels and collections.Your child sees only creators you approve, one by one, and you can hide any single video.
SearchA parent can turn search off, limiting your child to channels verified by YouTube Kids. There is no search for children.
AutoplayA parent can turn on “Disable autoplay”.There is no autoplay, no up-next and no recommendations grid.
Switching videosNo switching budget.A small budget of switches per session. Finishing a video is always free.
Screen timeA timer.Daily and weekly limits per child, optional allowed hours, and a clock your child can see that stops at zero.

When is YouTube Kids the better choice?

  • You want a much bigger selection than a hand-picked catalogue can offer.
  • You'd rather pick a ready-made content level than approve creators one by one.

When is WonderWatch the better choice?

  • You want to approve every creator your child sees, and have each video rated like a film.
  • You want to discourage hopping from clip to clip, not just limit total time.
  • You'd like a short email each evening showing what was watched and for how long.

Why was WonderWatch built?

Paul tried YouTube Kids with his own two kids and set it aside for two reasons: curating by hand felt clunky, and it was too easy to hop from clip to clip every minute. WonderWatch is the slower, smaller, better-judged version he wanted instead.

What else do parents ask?

Is WonderWatch made by YouTube or Google?
No. WonderWatch is an independent family app made by Firmin Labs. It plays videos through YouTube's official player, under YouTube's terms.
Is WonderWatch's catalogue as big as YouTube Kids'?
No, and that's deliberate. WonderWatch is a smaller, hand-picked catalogue: every creator is reviewed and every video is rated before any family can see it.
Do I need a YouTube account to use WonderWatch?
No. A parent signs up with an email address, and children don't have accounts at all.
Does WonderWatch have ads?
Not of its own. YouTube may show its own ads inside its player, which we can't control.

Who makes WonderWatch?

WonderWatch is built by Paul Firmin, a parent of two in Aurora, Ontario, at Firmin Labs, a one-person studio making small, useful tools for families.
